FAQ:
What do I do if I get into a vehicle accident?:
What
are my rights in accident investigations?
The
same principles as writing a memorandum or being interrogated
apply here as well.
Say
you just got into an accident, obviously, if there are injuries,
or damage to other property, certain procedures need to be
followed (ie. EMS, other LEA's need to be activated) before
you worry about your Union Rights.
Once
a Supervisor arrives on scene, they may ask you what happened.
Don't forget, this is an investigation, anything you say may
be used in an accident report. You have the right to
Union representation. A simple answer might be, "there
seems to have been an accident."
Conversely,
if you here another Agent get into an accident, contact a
Union representative ASAP.
Additionally,
you will not be required to submit a memorandum, however,
you will be required to submit an accident report. Be
thorough, accurate, and point out any circumstances surrounding
the incident that will help mitigate any potential discipline.
Also, have a Union representative look over your statement!
Don't
forget to show remorse! Funny as that sounds, management
often cites lack of remorse for deciding disciplinary actions
